When my best friend summoned me to spontaneously get a piercing with her, how could I say no?
We may be cliche, but not too cliche: same side, different piercing. She was bold with her glamorous surface tragus piercing and I with my striking rook piercing. Forgive my adventure of choice, as the rook, to some, may not be so much on the exotic side- however to me, oh so enticing. Being a month old, my rook is healing nicely, despite the expected crust- which I must admit, is strangely satisfying to peel off. Following the stabbing sensation, a curved barbell was placed, sitting in the crevasse of my ear. Luckily, there was no swelling just a mild stinging, as well as the odd feeling of a foreign presence in my ear region. Accidentally turning onto the side of your piercing is not recommended, as it will indeed lead to slight bleeding- which I must say, is not fun to clean.
-apologies to the sensitive readers, excuse the blood-

Maintaining hygiene with the piercing wasn’t too difficult, a cotton bud I hold sacred as my trusty tool in this process. Regularly cleaning around it with warm salt water twice a day is crucial in avoiding an infection, or better yet, cauliflower ear. I did so by using a solution of hot water: 3/4 boiling water and 1/4 luke warm water-and a table soon of salt. I also personally flushed my ear out with the shower head during showers for a extra fresh feeling, although this is not essential. Unfortunately, sleeping on my left side is occasional when finding a specific position. This, I don’t find too concerning, as it is still early in the 12 week recovery journey. However, not taking into account the sensitivity of pressure on it, it is completely painless now, be aware of a sore cartilage, if you do curiously fiddle with it like me.

Aside from this, the piercing is a wonderfully, funky new addition to my ear. I appreciate its uniqueness, with how very few people bare this and would most definitely recommend this to all. To those considering: be audacious and take the plunge, it’s positively worth it. I hope this is helpful and your piercing quest is successful and gentle. ☾kisses, P☽ x
p.s Update 4 years later: it's healed so much better now! I can actually sleep on it now from different angles and it's not painful. I have to say, change the jewellery to higher quality metal, your cartilage will love you for it. Preferably titanium xx
